Duration in sex: How much is ideal for men and how much for women

One of the most common problems in a relationship, according to what the couples themselves admit when visiting specialist doctors and counselors, is the quality of sexual intercourse and, in particular, the duration of both the sexual act and the foreplay.

What does men think as the “ideal” time for sex for both men and women and what is the woman’s opinion? A recent study, reported by the Huffington Post [1], may has the answer of what is “normal” and the average sex time is not as long as you’d think.

According to the study, the average British couple lasts for 19 minutes—10 minutes of foreplay and nine minutes of intercourse. About 24 percent of couples in the study believe half an hour is an ideal timeframe for intercourse and 66 percent believed 15 minutes is enough.

Now according to a previous study [2], the duration can range from 33 seconds to 44 minutes – but the average is 5 minutes. However other studies have reported much lower averages than 5 minutes.

For example a 2008 study [3] found that considered “adequate” lasted anywhere from three to seven minutes, while seven to 13 minutes was considered a “desirable” length for intercourse.

A 2005 survey also discovered that sex lasts about five to six minutes average [4], not taking foreplay in account. According to Harry Fisch [5], author of the new book The New Naked: The Ultimate Sex Education for Grown-Ups, 45 percent of men finish the sex act within two minutes. And according to sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, whose research found that “75 percent of men ejaculated within two minutes of penetration at least half of the time” [6].

As you can see, this different data can’t clear the answer about the ‘normal’ duration in sex. So don’t feel too bad if you’re failing to hit the British couple’s 19-minute mark.
