Dietary Myths: Eating Cereal Help you Lose Weight

Cereals find their way in our kitchen. Dozens of products [1], where in recent years they have been moved from simple snacks to "necessary" for a balanced diet, and more necessary for someone who wants to lose weight. But do you lose weight with cereals?

Most of the time, a nutritionist would suggest that you should eat cereals (with low-fat milk and I will post in a next article on low-fat products), while you certainly have read on various sites suggesting cereals as necessary for your health and a tool to someone who is on a diet. The truth is that cereals which sold today, do not contribute to weight lose, since most of them contains sugar and glucose syrup, which is worse than sugar.

Let's see the ingredients of two products:

Nestle FITNESSĀ® Original
Cereal Grains (Whole Grain Wheat (contains Gluten), Rice), Sugar, Partially Inverted Brown Sugar Syrup, Barley Malt Extract (contains Gluten), Salt, Glucose Syrup, Trisodium Phosphate [2].

Kellogg's Frosted Flakes
Milled corn, sugar, contains 2% or less of malt flavor, salt, BHT for freshness [3].

The classical recipe of the nutritionist is pretty much known. Drinking lots of juices, eating breakfast cereals, preferring low-fat products, a recipe that's wrong. It is at least funny someone who fears the sugar in his coffee, where certainly anyone who starts a diet will prefer its coffee black, to consume these cereals that are loaded with sugar and other sweeteners.

You are therefore at risk to gain weight instead to losing it, and causing a number of problems to your body from this excessive consumption of sugar. The funniest thing is that some people suggest these cereals as a breakfast, where in the morning, the body (and fat cells) are more sensitive to insulin and the sure thing is that sugar will be stored as fat.

If you want to eat cereals because you like them, you are free to go. But do not do it because you believed that by eating cereals you are dieting or doing anything good to your body. Those who lose pounds while eating cereals, they do it because they cut their calories too much. If you want a better breakfast or snack, pour some fruits and kefir in a blender and mix or mix some cocoa powder with a banana or even eat some fruits with yogurt.
